Executive Summary:Active electronic microarrays which have been developed by Nanogen for genomic research and DNA diagnostics also have considerable potential for nanofabrication applications. These microarray devices are able to create reconfigurable electric field transport geometries on their surface which allows charged reagent and analyte molecules (DNA, RNA, oligonucleotide probes, amplicons antibodies, nanoparticles and micron sized semiconductor devices) to be selectively transported and positioned on any of the microscopic sites on the device surface. These microelectronic array devices are able to carry out a highly parallel electric field pick and place process for the directed hierarchal assembly of molecular, nanoscale and microscale components into higher-order 3D structures and devices. More recently, such devices have demonstrated the ability to produce multiple (20) layer nanoparticle materials in a rapid and highly parallel way. In principle, this allows 3D fabrication of highly integrated materials and devices with islands or matrices of self-assembled layered nanostructures within microscale geometries of other structural materials. Such nanofabrication technology could be extremely useful in producing highly integrated nano/micro/macrostructures for nanophotonic, photovoltaic, fuel cell, and smart/morphing nanomaterials applications.
