|Executive Summary:||Silk Displays makes all-plastic, robust, shapeable, lightweight LCDs with better colour performance, brighter display, lower power consumption, at half the cost of the competition. These provide significant benefits to the rugged display market ($3B USD 2005), including improved performance and reliability, drastically reduced packaging requirements, reduced footprint and weight, and improved VAR/integrator margins. Focused initially on rugged displays, Silk Displays is positioning to address the entire $100 B USD (2009) Flat Panel Display market.
Glass-based LCDs have serious limitations that are delaying their adoption in a number of high value markets. Being made of glass, they are fragile and heavy, a serious liability for mobile and industrial applications. Hardening glass LCDs for rugged applications is expensive, and costs increase along with panel size.
Rugged display integrators and VARs buy standard glass-based LCDs and harden them for their customers’ applications, resulting in units that cost much more than standard LCDs, are heavier and bulkier, and have poorer performance. Silk Displays’ products improve display performance and survivability while reducing unit cost. In addition, Silk Displays’ all-plastic LCDs significantly reduce the hardening effort, improving the integrators’ margins, while providing the end-customer with displays with much better performance.
