Semiconductor material is expensive, and the soaring demand for PV is pushing up the price of silicon feedstock. One way of extracting more energy from every sq.mtr. of semiconductor material is to use solar concentration and high efficiency, non-silicon cells. Concentrating PV (CPV) systems use relatively inexpensive optics such as mirrors or lenses to “concentrate” light from a relatively broad collection area onto a much smaller area of active compound semiconductor PV cell material. CPV systems must be pointed directly at the sun because they work by focusing sunlight onto a targeted area, and require twin axis trackers to follow the sun’s trajectory throughout the day. QuantaSol has the world’s highest performance concentrating solar cell technology, the company believes that it can soon demonstrate a world record single junction solar cell with an efficiency consistently greater than 27%. Further, the company believes that by incorporating their GaAs cell into a multi junction concentrating cell, they can improve existing efficiencies by as much as 4%, ultimately yielding a cell which is reliably capable of delivering greater than 40% conversion efficiency | | Venture is: | Seed Level |
