Sunlight Direct

Location:TN, US
Speaker:John Morris
Title:President & CEO
Primary Industry:Energy
Executive Summary:Sunlight Direct was formed in Oak Ridge, TN, in 2004 to commercialize a patented, solar-based platform technology from ORNL. The technology includes solar concentrator that redistributes sunlight through fiber optics for use in commercial and retail lighting, concentrated photovoltaics and photobioreactors (biofuel production, CO2 sequestration, etc.). Delivering full-spectrum, free, concentrated natural light, Sunlight Direct\'s platform technology enables economically non-viable \'green\' technologies to be commercially viable. Hybrid Solar Lighting (HSL), the Company’s initial commercial product, integrates natural lighting within existing artificial lighting systems; thus, delivering natural light with the convenience and flexibility of artificial light. Given the product’s highest quality of light, energy savings and environmental impact, the greater market for HSL includes: high-end retailers; building projects seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification; and Government buildings that now require life cycle cost analysis and LEED certification. These markets represent over $1 billion in potential annual sales of systems, installation, and maintenance and monitoring contracts. Revenue in 2006 was $400K and is projected to exceed $70MM by 2011. As of year-end 2006, Sunlight Direct has sold 20+ beta units nationwide to customers including Aveda, Wal-Mart and San Diego Gas & Electric.
