Obama Awards National Medal of Science and Medal of Technology in Nation’s Capital, Reinforces Government’s Commitment to Funding R&D

President notes importance of scientific progress to national prosperity and security

This month, President Obama awarded thirteen national science and technology medals at the White House, and took the opportunity to stress the importance of science, technology, and innovation to the overall US economy. The President announced that the administration would dedicate 3% of the GDP to R&D, which will be invested in all stages of the innovation ecosystem, from education to basic research to private innovation. This commitment to funding is one of many action items the administration is taking to encourage and grow innovative activities-just last month, the Department of Commerce formed a new office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and formed a National Advisory Council that will be comprised of innovators, investors, and leaders from the non-profit sector.
