Venture Capital Shows Strong Turnaround in First Quarter of 2010

Data shows increase in both total dollars investment and number of deals

Close to $5 billion was invested and just over 680 transactions were completed by venture capitalists in the US during Q1 210, according to the latest statistics generated by the MoneyTree Report from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA), based on data provided by Thomson Reuters.

When looking at the data by industry sector, life sciences continue to dominate financing, accounting for about 28% of all dollars invested. The Cleantechnology sector was also strong, with $773 million in venture capital dollars captured in the first quarter of 2010; five of the top 10 deals in the same quarter were in Cleantechnology. The Money Tree report also noted six sectors experienced an increase in venture investments when compared to the last quarter, including Semiconductors, Industrial/Energy, and Electronics/Instrumentation.

The NVCA observed that cleantechnology and life sciences-related ventures should continue to drive the investment community, but that a good number of venture capitalists will continue to focus on fund-raising activities for this year.
