MIT Researchers Call on the US to Capitalize on “Convergence” of Life, Physical, and Engineering Sciences for Life Sciences Innovation

Convergence theory offers case for a “Third Revolution” in the biomedicine to revolutionize healthcare and medicine

The MIT white paper on convergence was presented at the AAAS forum this month. MIT Institute Professor and Nobel Laureate Phillip Sharp, one of the report's authors, told the forum, "(Convergence) entails collaboration among research groups but, more deeply, the integration of disciplinary approaches that were originally viewed as separate and distinct. This merging of technologies, processes and devices into a unified whole will create new pathways and opportunities for scientific and technological advancement." Recommendations in the white paper include providing appropriate funding within the NIH for convergence research, improved inter-agency connections around convergence research and funding, and educating and supporting the work of convergence researchers.
