CCUS Capacity Building and Technology Adoption in Mexico

Mexico has committed in the Paris Agreement to ambitious greenhouse gas reductions by 2030. Their plan to meet these goals, which is summarized in the CCUS Technology Roadmap in Mexico, includes widespread deployment of CCUS technologies in power and other industries and includes utilization applications, particularly enhanced oil recovery (EOR). One of the main objectives will be to set commitments for CFE, the power company, and PEMEX, the oil and gas company, to develop an integrated CCUS project, using CO2 from a power plant for EOR. Mexico recognizes that facilitating adoption of CCUS requires policy commitments, regulatory development, and technology advancement from pilot-scale to commercialization, but also workforce training and development. The Engineering School at the Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and University of California’s Berkeley Energy and Climate Institute are working together to establish a master’s degree specialization in CCUS and international research collaborations. This presentation will describe the elements of the program and potential opportunities for collaborative research.
