CEA Tech: Printed Organic Sensors, using polymer inks with piezoelectric, pyroelectric or electrostrictive properties, on Large Area Flexible Surfaces (320mm x 380mm )

TECHNOLOGY SUMMARY

Innovative polymer materials, such as PVDF-TrFE, exhibits electrical properties similar to the existing conventional inorganic compounds. As they can be easily formulated in liquid solutions, these inks (combined with additive printing techniques, e.g. screen-print) allow the manufacturing of large area, flexible surfaces sensitive to touch, pressure or proximity.

Primary Application Area: Electronics, Sensors, Communications

Technology Development Status: Prototype

TECHNOLOGY DESCRIPTION

Compared to conventional, discrete sensors using inorganic compounds, and standard vacuum deposition techniques and lithography, printing technologies can, within the same process steps, print many sensors on a large surface, positioned at the locations specified by the user. This removes the need to pick & place numerous discrete sensors. Moreover, different kind of sensors can be co-printed on the same large area substrates. The final sensing foils are flexible, bendable and lightweight. Easy integration (lightweight, conformability,..) is a plus to elaborate smart objects , or smart surfaces. In some cases, some transparency of the devices can be achieved.

FIGURES OF MERIT

Value Proposition:
- Large Area Sensing surfaces are easily manufactured, w/o hybrid integration of discrete components.
- Light weight and conformability to the final system of interest (I.e. spoiler, wings, keyboards,..) – Low Visual impact
- Low cost: cheap substrate, large volume manufacturing, additive printing technique
- Easy Customization
- Low cycle time
