Yissum and partners developed new method for producing Micro-Crystalline Cellulose (MCC) from paper mill waste
The MCCs can be processed into micro-structured foams, which replaces fossil fuel-based foams for various applications. The technology was developed by Professor Oded Shoseyov and Dr. Shaul Lapidot from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (also co-founders of Melodea), and Mr. Tord Gustafsson, an expert in composite materials from Sweden. Holmen, a Swedish forest industry group, has in parallel also made an investment in Melodea. MCC is produced through processing wood pulp, and is considered an ideal sustainable option for a variety of materials, including plastic and metal. The company and university claim MCC is transparent, strong, cost-effective, and safer than non-organic alternatives.
