GE Aviation to Build Ceramic Matrix Composites Plant in North Carolina

June 24, 2013 10:58 AM EST By: Jennifer Rocha

Plant will manufacture the nano composites for high-pressure turbine components

The plant is expected to be operational in 2014, and the ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) will be used for more parts in addition to engines.  CMCs are an important part of GE Aviation’s engines division, as they allow the company to make jet engines that are lighter in weight and can withstand more heat yet reduce cooling.  The CMCs are created in sheets by GE’s ceramics lab in Delaware, which will then be integrated into engines by the North Carolina plant.
