Scale is the creation of inorganic soluble salts from aqueous brines during oil and gas production. The scale deposits at the internal surface of the pipelines under the supersaturation conditions. The deposition of the scale leads to unavoidable damage of the equipment parts. Consequently, suspension of oil operations becomes essential in order to replace the damaged parts. In the petroleum industry, such interruptions are escorted by extremely high costs. In this paper the sensitivity and selectivity of carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) to detect scale in oil and gas pipes has been investigated. CNMs are prepared and synthetized by three different techniques. Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) of CNMs on metals substrate (Cu or NI) and subsequent exfoliation onto Si substrate. Inkjet printing using the Fujifilm Dimatrix DMP 2831 and the last method is the smear casting technique of the CNMs nanocomposites on a glass slide. In order to secure good electrical contact between CNMs and the metal electrode, CNMs were initially printed on a wafer with insulation layer, and then the metal electrodes were patterned by using lift-off process. Electrical resistance of smear casted CNMs were measured before and after adding drop of saline solution. The resistance increased by 50%.
