MIT Reseachers Working to Create Self-Assembling Computer Chips

Process being developed could become an alterative to photolithography
The MIT research team, led by Engineering Professors Caroline Ross and Karl Berggren, are using electron beam lithography to create nano “posts" on a silicon chip. The process first involves the deposit of copolymers onto the chip, which then spontaneously link to the posts and arrange themselves into useful patterns. To create different patterns in the circuit design can be achieved, according to MIT, “by changing the shape and position of the posts, the proportions of the polymers, and the length of the molecule chains.” The team is now looking to create functioning circuits in a prototype chip.
