Biotal Technologies Opens International R&D Center in Wales

Company Develops Nontoxic, Naturally Based Products for Shipping and Other Industries

ALPHARETTA, Ga.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Biotal Technologies LLC, an innovative biotechnology company specializing in products using bacterial, microbial and antimicrobial technology, has opened a Research and Development center in Cardiff, Wales to serve its international customers.

David ap John-Williams, Marketing Manager of Biotal Technologies, said, "The control of bacteria in waste has often been dealt with by potentially toxic materials. We have developed unique ways of treating waste with natural materials so that there is less impact on the environment."

“This area of Wales has very good resources for biotechnology,” he said. “The universities have excellent reputations and we are fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with them on developing some of our products.”

Biotal Technologies has received funding from Finance Wales, a provider of commercial funding to small and medium sized businesses in Wales, and a Regional Selective Assistance (RSA) grant from the Welsh Assembly Government. The combined investment into the new facility will total more than £300,000 ($600,000).

"The investment from Finance Wales, the RSA grant from the Welsh Assembly Government and support from Cardiff Council were an important element to this latest phase," ap John-Williams said. “We have received a lot of support from the Welsh government.”

“We have a dedicated Technology Consultant who has introduced us to other companies working in our market sector where we might find common ground and technology that we could utilize. South Wales is a good area to be in. It is all about partnerships and relationships.”

In the Washroom Hygiene sector, one of the company’s products, Biosan P plus, is already effectively protecting users of sanitary disposal units. Biotal Technologies uses natural actives to control potentially harmful microorganisms in feminine hygiene waste allowing for safe disposal in a manner that will not harm the environment.

As well as the washroom sector, Biotal Technologies have created a range of biotechnology based products for the global marine industry. The disposal of waste by ships is very highly regulated and ships have to treat waste materials on board, before disposing in the appropriate manner. Our products enhance the performance of the ship-board systems. They are of great benefit to the end user as they perform well but do not contain harmful chemicals which could find their way into the marine environment.”

The R&D center is in Capital Business Park, Cardiff.

Geraint Jones, head of International Business Wales, Americas, called the decision by Biotal Technologies another example of technology driven companies taking advantage of Wales’ business friendly environment and its excellent academic infrastructure. He noted that Biotal Technologies products fit into the increasingly important “green technology” industry.

“Wales is a natural entry point into the European market and the government, industry and universities are very active in developing environmentally friendly products, so we are very pleased to welcome Biotal Technologies to Cardiff,” Jones said.

Michael Owen, senior investment executive at Finance Wales, said, "Biotal Technologies has the potential for high growth within the UK, European and global markets and is continuously developing new, natural ways of dealing with waste associated products. Our investment will ensure a firm foundation for its future growth."
